"All that peace man, it felt so good it hurt. I want to hurt it back" I personally, think this quote means that that soldier was so peaceful he felt almost guilty for leaving. He had to break the peace because he felt like he had escaped the war rather than ended it. I think this quote says that peace is appreciated when you don't have it.
The Vietnam War had long periods of monotony and peace and short flashes of anarchy and action. The soldiers sat around waiting for something to happen and when it did they didn't hesitate to act and fight. Maybe they needed peace in order to fight in the periods of chaos. This quote makes you think that they almost longed for the battles, since they spent so much time waiting for it.
